Gadaladeniya, Lankatilaka, Embekke & Galangolla

These religious edifices called the western shrines are some of the oldest buildings in the Kandyan kingdom dating from the 14th century A.D. They contain paintings and sculptures of great historical and artistic importance. The genius of the Kandyan master craftsmen are attested here, whereby Gadaladeniya Viharaya is built of stone, Lankatilaka Viharaya and its Devale from clay brick with a unique architectural design and Embekke Devale out of wood while the mysterious Galengolla Potgul Viharaya with its valuable ola leaf manuscripts has a facade in the style of Florentine Renaissance and its interior resembles a Christian basilica with cupola and octagonal pillars. It also contains a beautifully painted giant wooden chest.

These areas are also home to another type of Kandyan master craftsmen who are the manufacturers of brassware, silverware and wood carvers. Numerous wayside outlets offer many bargains.
