|
|
Suriyagoda viharaya is said to have existed since the 15th century A.D. The present buildings date from the 18th century A.D. and is also called a Tempita viharaya because it is an image house built on stone pillars on which wooden cross beams support the walls and floor of the shrine. It also contains some valuable 18th century A.D. mural paintings and many artifacts of special interest. Dodanwela devale is situated amongst centuries old Na trees (Mesua nagassarum) or ironwood trees in a beautiful and serene landscape. It is here historically King Rajasingha II offered his crown after his victory over the Portuguese. It also contains the palanquin used by this king. Traditionally this devale was dedicated to a local deity but now to the Hindu god Vishnu. Duration of visit: ½ day. |
