Excursions in and around Kandy from Villa Rosa Explore the Hill Country & Discover the Island Relax at "Villa Rosa" for that Royal Treatment
|
Villa Rosa as a base in the centre of the country offers various options to discover the island with one to three nights staying out. We give some destinations with complete different features to stay. It is up to you to extend your stay and or go somewhere else. Arrangements for accommodation and transport can be made from Villa Rosa.
North of Kandy you find the Cultural Triangle where you will find places of historic and cultural interest in abundance. You can make it a day trip, climb the Sigiriya Rock and visit the Dambulla cave Temple with hundreds of Buddha Statues on your way back.
But you can also stay out one night in Giritale or Polonnaruwa and visit the ancient city of Polonnaruwa and the ancient irrigation schemes around Giritale.
Polonnaruwa is the second ancient capital mentioned next to Anuradhapura as a must in every guide. Polonnaruwa is not so vast spread as Anuradhapura and it is easier to imagine how this ancient city looked like in the 13th century.
Trincomalee as the main harbour on the East Cost was for a long time difficult to approach. That has changed now – but the destruction of 20 year of war is still to be seen.
North of Trinco you find a nice stretch of beach but still you find very few hotels operating. We will arrange the needful if you want to see the situation in a country at a turning point from war to peace – and enjoy the beach.
Arugambay further South on the East coast was always accessible, but not that easy. Today the roads are still in a poor condition, but you will be rewarded by the beach and exiting wildlife. Later you can say you were there before the others came.
There are only a very few professionally run places south of Pottuvil. We will find you a place if not in Stardust Beach Hotel with our Danish friends somewhere else along the beach.
Stay two or three nights and come back to Kandy – or go further South to Galapita close to Buttala/ Moneragala
Four open Bungalows are located on the other side of the river and you get access crossing a shaky suspension bridge. The bungalows spread over a wide area, so despite the openness you are not sitting at your neighbours feet. There is no electricity – but already the second day you will not miss it. The river with its natural whirlpools and massages will compensate you for everything.
Galapita is an ideal base to pay a visit to Kataragama.
Between Hambantota and Tangalle you find a number of places just to enjoy the still deserted South Coast. Darwins at Ranna close to Tangalle is one such place offering you the basics to enjoy the beach.
Some people think, Colombo has not so much to offer and it is not worth to carry all your belongings to town. But it is good to run around for a day to do the shopping and visit two or three places of interest. If you want we can also arrange a day out in Colombo (Colombo Plaza or Mount Lavinia Beach). There are also reasonable private places centrally located. You only have to know where? To go by train is the most adventurous mode of transport, but you can also go by bus (intercity) or car.
